North American OV-10 Bronco

The North American OV-10 was a light attack and observation aircraft developed under a 1963 joint U.S. military specification for a “light armed reconnaissance aircrft” or LARA. It saw service in Vietnam in the close support and forward air controller roles. Limited numbers were provided to the air forces of Colombia, Indonesia, Lebanon, the Phillippines, Thailand and Venezuela. It first flew July 16, 1965 and 356 were built. The original concept was for the OV-10 to be able to operate from roads and other unimproves surfaces near the troops it was supporting, effectively substituting for attack helicopters, but the aircraft grew larger and more complex over the course of its development and it required air bases for operation.

A “bronco” is an untrained or feral horse (i.e., a mustang) that has yet to be tamed and is prone to behavior such as bucking. North American’s use of the name probably refers to its famous previous product, the P-51.

A few OV-10s are still in use by U.S. government agencies for drug interdiction, firefighting coordination, and other tasks. A few have been operated as warbirds by civilian owners in the U.S. and in Europe. About a dozen preserved aircraft are on display, mostly in the U.S., but some in the other countries to which they were supplied.
